Cubs
Cubs, aged 9 to 11, take on bigger adventures: camping, hillwalking, badge work and teamwork, building independence in a supportive, fun setting.

What Cubs is all about
Cub Scouts is where the adventures get bigger. Our Cubs head out onto the hills, learn real outdoor skills and get a taste of camping, all while making good friends along the way.
Cubs work in small teams called Sixes, each led by a Cub Scout called a Sixer, with an assistant called a Seconder. Our leaders make sure every child gets a turn in these roles. Together, the Sixes make up the Cub pack.
Cubs are involved in planning and running some of their own meetings and activities. They help plan their own camps too, from deciding on the menu and doing some of the cooking to choosing which activities to do.
Activities allow each Cub to develop in six areas of growth, according to their own abilities and particular interests:
All our leaders are trained volunteers, Garda vetted and supported by Scouting Ireland.
What to wearOutdoor clothes, sturdy shoes or boots and a rain jacket. We're out in the Wicklow weather whenever we can be.
The Cubs uniform is a jumper and our group's Roundwood necker. You can buy both from The Scout Shop at thescoutshop.ie.

A year in Cubs
Hillwalking
Exploring the trails around Roundwood, from Scarr to the Vartry, and learning to read a map.
Camping
Pitching tents, cooking outdoors and planning their own camps, from the menu to the activities.
Skills & badges
When Cubs meet a set of challenges or master a level in a skill, they earn a badge to sew on their uniform.
Teamwork
Working together in Sixes, with every Cub getting a turn as Sixer or Seconder.

A typical evening
Cubs meet every Friday during school terms, 7.30pm – 8.45pm, at the Annamoe Centre. Now and then we meet at the weekend instead, for a hike or a day activity. No two weeks are the same, but most Friday evenings go something like this:
- 1Arrive and get going with a game or warm-up challenge.
- 2Skills, badge work or an outdoor activity, often in Sixes.
- 3Come back together to review the evening and plan what's next.
Moving up
When your Cub turns twelve, they'll be invited to move up to Scouts, where the adventure continues with old friends from Cubs and new Scout friends.
Our group runs Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Venture Scouts is Scouting Ireland's section for ages 15 to 18.
