About Scouts

What Scouts is all about

In the Scout section, young people really start to run things themselves. With leaders there to support and keep everyone safe, our Scouts plan their own activities, camps and expeditions, and learn by doing.

In Scouting Ireland, the Scouts in a group form a troop, made up of small teams called patrols. Each patrol has a Patrol Leader, giving Scouts a real chance to lead and take responsibility.

At meetings, Scouts develop their leadership and life skills, and learn scouting skills like hiking, hill-walking, camping, knots, first aid, cooking and more.

Your leaders

All our leaders are trained volunteers, Garda vetted and supported by Scouting Ireland.

What to wear

Proper outdoor gear: sturdy boots, layers and a good rain jacket. Scouts are outside in most weathers.

The Scouts uniform is a shirt and our group's Roundwood necker. You can buy both from The Scout Shop at thescoutshop.ie.

Every Friday

A typical evening

Scouts meet every Friday during school terms, 7.30pm – 9pm, at the Annamoe Centre. Now and then we meet at the weekend instead, for a hike or a day activity. No two weeks are the same, but most Friday evenings go something like this:

  1. 1Patrols gather and get the evening's plan under way.
  2. 2Skills, a project or an outdoor activity, led by the patrols.
  3. 3The troop comes together to review and plan upcoming camps and adventures.
Growing up through scouting

Moving up

Each section is designed for its age group. As young people grow, they move up to the next section, taking their skills and friendships with them.
